4 Rainbow Warrior
Ship belonging to Greenpeace, that was blown up and sunk in 1985, in Auckland Harbour, New Zealand, in a covert operation by the French intelligence service. A Greenpeace photographer was killed in the operation. It was revealed many years later that this operation - which was described as an act of international terrorism - had been personally authorized by President Mitterrand. French involvement was suspected right from the start, as the Rainbow Warrior was scheduled to protest against French nuclear testing at Mururoa Atoll, in the southern Pacific. However, initially, the French denied all involvement, until the true story was uncovered by a pair of investigative journalists fromBritain's Sunday Times newspaper.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais. The elections of February 1936 were won by a coalition of socialist and anarchist groups known as the Frente Popular or FP, and were followed by a period of social disorder. On July 18 of that year, General Francisco Franco led a military coup. In the ensuing war Franco's side was known as the Nacionales and the government forces as the Republicanos. Neither army was well-equipped, so foreign support was a decisive factor: the USSR sent aid to the Republicans and volunteers from all over Europe formed Brigadas Internacionales (International Brigades) to fight for the Republican side. Fascist Italy and Germany sent troops and weapons to Franco. The fighting was bitter and protracted, and the Nationalists' superior firepower finally triumphed. The war ended officially on April 1, 1939, when Franco proclaimed himself Jefe del Estado, a position he held for the next 36 years.See:ver nota culturelle FRANQUISMO in franquismo* * *1) (Mil, Pol) war2) (fam) ( problemas) trouble, hassle (colloq)* * *= war, warfare.Ex. – He was pushed. – The first steps in this field were taken by UNESCO.6. – He is said to be a good actor. – She is considered a good teacher. – We have been led to believe/told that our system is better. – Preparations were under way/begun for celebrating New Year.7. – We should be happy and not cry/instead of crying. – You must not say that/You shouldn’t talk like that. – What should we/you do?8. – What a fantastic cake you baked! – I saw him take his very first steps. – Am I starving!/Because I’m hungry, that’s why! – It was an absolutely unbelievable story.9. – What a wonderful husband you have! – She really got badly bruised yesterday. – That’s tree hundred you owe me, kiddo!10. – When is it he’s coming to see you? – So what is he telling her?***Ваня, мне кажется, не пришел. ( интонационное выделение имени собственного) – I don’t think Vanya came.
